Company History

R.D. “Pat” Neighbors started Neighbors Construction Company after World War II when the Navy gave him a tool box filled with hand tools in exchange for his exemplary service. Pat worked for contractors in the Kansas City area and found work wherever he could. With a growing tool collection and an unrelenting determination to become successful, Pat built a crew of craftsman and by 1951 he was framing houses.

Houses were not the only thing to come; in 1960 his framing crews took on apartments. It didn’t take long before Pat saw his future in general contracting. 1968 marked the first apartment complex where Neighbors Construction Company was the General Contractor. The carpenters and foreman who once were cutting stairs and rafters or managing framing crews with Pat were superintendents in 1968. Many of these men stayed with the company for more than 30 years.

Pat’s son, Roger, expanded Neighbors Construction’s forte in 1977 when Pat put him in charge of running the first footing crew. Two aspects of the construction process, the foundation and framing, which are very critical for pushing the schedule, were now controlled by Neighbors Construction. This gave Pat and Roger an edge over the competition. In 1989 Pat sold the Company to Roger.

Since 2000, Roger’s sons Ryan and Aaron have been with the company after both graduated from Colorado State University with degrees in construction management. Roger trained his sons as his father trained him, by insisting they learn from the ground up. Today, both Aaron and Ryan occupy central leadership and project management roles in the family company.

The year 2024 celebrates the 73rd year Neighbors Construction has been delivering superior construction projects in Kansas City and the Central Midwest. We couldn’t be more proud of the solid reputation we’ve built and we look forward to continued success in the future.

Today, our guiding philosophy is still the same as it was back in 1951: work hard, push the schedule, and hire loyal, dedicated people to build a quality project that exceeds the client’s expectations.

Roger Neighbors

President

Roger Neighbors is President of Neighbors Construction Company, and as the son of the company’s original founder, R.D. Pat Neighbors, Roger learned the construction business from the ground up. His early years of diversified construction experience include everything from hands-on foundation work and rough framing to running the companies’ self-performed work crews. He also handled the companies’ punch-out and close-out problem-solving. Roger has presided over day-to-day operations and business development since 1989, and during his tenure as president, the company has grown to become one of the area’s premier General Contractors. Roger has always relied on tried and true construction methods but is open to new products, procedures and technologies.

Roger’s ability to build a strong foundation of trust and respect between real estate owners, developers and architects is one of many reasons most of our clients are repeat customers. His values of honesty, integrity and hard work extend not only to himself, but to employees and subcontractors, as well.

Roger’s detail-oriented, cost-conscious approach gives him the ability to help Neighbors Construction Company achieve successful results, project after project.

Nancy Neighbors

Vice President

Nancy Neighbors oversees all aspects of construction billing, including accounts receivable and accounts payable. She joined Neighbors Construction Company in 1982 as a customer service representative, later combining those functions with final field inspections with owner/architects prior to becoming the office manager. Her knowledge in project culmination and experience in accounting gives Nancy a detailed perspective of the big picture for the company and the industry.

“When you look at annual numbers, it’s clear that the construction market goes through a lot of ups and downs,” Nancy says. “Our clients know that Neighbors will be here, regardless of the changing market. Our staying power is proven. We’ve been a general contractor since 1968.”

In addition to her work at Neighbors, Nancy has 35 years of accounting experience. Her education is in business and interior design from Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Ryan Neighbors

Vice President | Project Manager

Ryan Neighbors is a Vice President and project manager with Neighbors Construction Company and possesses more than 20 years experience in the construction industry. Following in the footsteps of integrity and principles set forth from the generations before, Ryan is a third generation Neighbors and adds diversified field and commercial experience to the management team.

By utilizing his incredible people, organizational and technology skills, Ryan successfully manages his projects by delivering them on-time and on-budget.

“It’s our honesty and quality of work that has been the staying power of Neighbors, and I plan to see that continued in the years to come,” Ryan indicates. “It is an honor to be a part of the Neighbors team and family legacy.”

As a Junior at Colorado State University, Ryan was voted ‘Construction Management Student of the Year’ by Builder Magazine. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Management from Colorado State University.

Aaron Neighbors

Vice President | Project Manager

Aaron Neighbors is a Vice President and project manager with Neighbors Construction Company. He began his field experience at age 14 by working part-time in the lumber business as a yardman and driver assistant, then moving into the mill shop fabricating wall panels and pre-hung door units. Later while attending college, Aaron worked as a wood frame construction carpenter and also as a commercial concrete construction leadman.

By the time Aaron graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Management, his formal education combined with his wealth of hands-on field experience had more than prepared him for a successful future in the family construction business.

Aaron’s field experience working from the ground up not only contributes to his hands-on style of supervision and expertise in project management, it also enables him to value everyone’s perspective and their role in the construction process. He knows that when you hire good people, they’ll do their jobs without the need to micro-manage.

Aaron says, “The people who work here at Neighbors make it easy, because we are all a family. We all want to see the company continue down the same successful path, consistently delivering a quality product.”
